3rd Generation Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mark's interest in orthopaedic surgery started from a young age, discussing orthopaedic conditions with his father. (The now retired Professor of Hand Surgery at Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg).
Mark is the third generation orthopaedic surgeon in the Fleming family: Reginald James Fleming was the first surgeon in the family, he served during WWII in the desert in North Africa returning home to Johannesburg to work as a General and Orthopaedic Surgeon until his retirement. Reg worked tirelessly designing and trialling metal plates and nail prototypes for fixing fractures surgically. During the early days of orthopaedics most fractures were managed with traction and plaster-of-paris casts.
Mark assisted John, his father, with hand surgery throughout his medical training. He gravitated to orthopaedic surgery, starting orthopaedic training in the United Kingdom (2005), completing training in Cape Town in 2013 and Fellowship exams in Australia in 2016.
Mark and Anne-Louise welcomed their first child, John to the world in December 2017. Their second son Thomas was born in June of 2020. Georgie their daughter was born in December 2021. They live in the Shire and are intimately associated with the joys of the ocean, Mark is an avid surfer and fisherman.
Living Life to the Full
A surfer/golfer/ bike rider I have empathy for people who love their sport, getting out and enjoying the world.

Helping people return to the activities that bring joy and meaning to their lives, is one of the reasons I love being an orthopaedic surgeon.
In 2006 I rode my motorcycle unsupported overland from London to South Africa crossing through 3 deserts and 15 Countries following the original Paris-Dakar rallye route.
A trip of a lifetime, it reinforced my belief that tenacity and hard work leads to success.
The kindness and generosity of the communities through which I travelled reaffirmed the intrinsically good nature of all human beings.
